Yes, there is a fine art to using squat toilets. If you are wearing trousers, roll the cuffs/legs up before you go (it’s easier than keeping them pulled up during the course of going), and drop your kit to about your knees. If you’re wearing a skirt or dress, just hike it up — very simple.
I find that after a few times using squat toilets, they are very comfortable and seriously easier on your system. There is nothing more satisfying than using a park squat toilet after several hours of drinking at Hanami (just don’t drink so much that your balance is totally off).
