Toilets

A standard squat from a train station

  • western toilets at most restaurants & department stores & SOME train stations
  • Japanese toilets at parks, small restaurants, small museums etc.
  • bring your own tissue (handed out at train stations)

Hotel toilet with all the comforts and then some

Yes, there is a fine art to using squat toilets.  If you are wearing trousers, roll the cuffs/legs up before you go (it’s easier than keeping them pulled up during the course of going), and drop your kit to about your knees.  If you’re wearing a skirt or dress, just hike it up — very simple.

I find that after a few times using squat toilets, they are very comfortable and seriously easier on your system.  There is nothing more satisfying than using a park squat toilet after several hours of drinking at Hanami (just don’t drink so much that your balance is totally off).

If you are still looking for more information, I suggest here:

Just remember to BYOT — bring your own tissue (which are handed out constantly throughout the day at train stations with advertisements).
